Why be a part of a support group?

By: Andrea Lopez

When faced with challenging situations, including those related to food allergies and EoE, one often needs to be resilient. A healthy way of learning to manage something difficult is to interact, bond, and find connection with others, which can be achieved by joining a support group.

A support group is able to give you numerous benefits. First, you can share your experience and also get to know others' experiences. You can also learn about ways to cope with the different situations that you might face while managing food allergies/EoE, which will bring you more confidence and strength. In addition, you can connect with people who may share similar experiences and emotions, even in distant geographic areas.

One of the most important benefits you can get from a support group is empowerment. Feeling empowered can help you to make your own health-related decisions so that you successfully manage your condition, maintain a higher wellness, and find access to the best care you possibly can.

Finally, it is important to understand the psychological effect of having food allergies/EoE. Evidence from multiple studies (cited below) suggests that being a part of a support group can decrease the prevalence of anxiety and worry related to your health condition. Having more open and honest conversations about your emotions and experiences can help you feel less alone, and can help you find an increased sense of hope and control.
